SPAM For The Holidays

Yikes! Have you noticed a huge increase in SPAM emails lately?  I have, even after upping my filters.  The Today Show had a story this morning where there’s a virus that can hijack your computer and hold it for ransom!

Scary stuff, but we all need to be reminded of the real dangers and how to avoid them.  The spammers make these emails look legitimate, like the ones you’d get for holidays from real stores or friends.

  1. First and foremost, don’t ever open emails that you didn’t subscribe to.  The spammers can tell that you opened it and also tells them they found a legitimate email address to send more SPAM too.
  2. Don’t be curious!  No matter how enticing the title, move it to the Trash.
  3. If an email has no subject, don’t open it, unless you know the person.
  4. Even if an email is from a friend, use caution in clicking on links.  When in doubt, ask your friend if they really sent it.
  5. Be careful who you give your email address out to.  You may not want to sign up for every giveaway online.  Not every company has a privacy policy and may sell their email lists for marketing.

SPAM is one present you don’t want for the holidays!
